about

In this 7th Album, t.k. bollinger has tilted even more to the left field by placing atmosphere at the centre of his production approach. This recording is underscored by treatments of field recordings – where the sound of birds, people and machinery, the rain and wind are projected into reverberant spaces. Bollinger’s intention was to show that music and soundart exists in relationship. Every recording is listened to in an atmosphere of everyday noises which adds colour and obscures definition. In short, he wanted to liberate his songs from the vacuum of silence that pervades modern production approaches as well as thumb his nose a bit to the cult of performative perfection that digital recording technology has allowed contemporary recording artists and producers to document and pursue.

This philosophy also extends to Bollinger’s song selection for this recording. A number of the songs were half finished pieces from his notebook, or ditties that petered out after a verse and a chorus. Even those songs that are fully fledged have been bisected to frame the beginning and end of these Imperfect Spaces. Between the more recognisable song forms are “anti-songs” – spontaneous compositions crafted in the recording studio that are sometimes sinister, sometimes comical. Some are directly taken from the voice memos that Bollinger uses as part of his creative practice to capture ideas: some are audible in the mix while others are obscured in the atmosphere created by the effects treatment.

This recording could be looked upon as an asymmetrical or disjointed symphony, or perhaps a musical happening, or emergence: a work of musical evolution with no prescribed destination, a map of an imperfect place that might just be the moment and place that we inhabit right now.

Shunning fashion and genre, master tunesmith, t.k. bollinger's songs are relatable because they examine what each of us confront in our day-to-day existence. Expressed with both sympathy and eloquence, his songs are celebrations of the joys and trials that life presents to each of us regardless of who or what we are – the universal ordinary concerns of a diverse and disparate humanity. ... more
