Jason Molina and his hauntingly beautiful stripped back album Let Me Go, Let Me Go, Let Me Go, were actually a recent discovery, so this may not technically rank as a "root of despair". However this album made a huge impact on my musical thinking and it's minimalist gloomy splendor is something for the ears to behold. This song underwent a few revisions and key changes to find the right pitch for my voice, however we settled on an earlier version for the powerful feel it evoked.
