about

For lovers of sadcore, this track needs no introduction. Its history is infamous and I suggest you type it into Google right away (while you are downloading it of course).

This version was recorded in anticipation of the 2013 Australian Parliamentary Elections. With the impending election of what promises to be one of the most benighted right wing governments in recent memory, a new dawn for sad and angry music from those with any semblance of heart or compassion is inevitable.

This is the first track for an ongoing collection of cover songs that I will be recording with my cohorts, that sinking feeling. They will be songs, some obvious, some surprising, that have been a big influence on my song writing aesthetic. It's important to remember that it is possible, in fact necessary, for us to find some beauty in order to cope in our personal sadness and public despair.

Props go to Diamanda Galás whose version of this song was the first I heard and accordingly influenced my interpretation of it a great deal.

lyrics

Sunday is gloomy my hours are slumberless.
Dearest, the shadows I live with are numberless.
None can extinguish this flame that I hold for you
Not where the black coach of sorrow has taken you.
Deep in my heart I know you’re not returning
There is no place for this love that is burning
On a gloomy Sunday.

Saddest of Sundays, with shadows I spend it;
My heart and I have decided to end it .
Soon there'll be candles and prayers murmured low;
Let them not weep, let them hear that I'm glad to go.
Death is no dream, for in death I'm caressing you;
With the last breath of my soul, I'll be blessing you.
On a gloomy Sunday.
